Four-Car Avondale Crash Kills Woman

black-car-accidentA four-car hit-and-run accident in the Avondale neighborhood left one woman dead and her husband with serious injuries. A 33-year-old man has been charged in the accident.

The accident occurred early last Sunday morning as the couple was driving to church in their black Chevrolet Cobalt, traveling northbound on North Kedzie Avenue. A man driving a white Jaguar ran a red light, smashing into the passenger side of the Cobalt at the intersection of West Belmont Avenue and North Kedzie Avenue. The collision caused the Cobalt to spin, hitting two vehicles in the southbound lane of North Kedzie Avenue.

Witnesses say the Jaguar’s driver fled the accident scene. Cellphone video taken by bystanders showed one of the vehicle drivers getting into a taxi and leaving the scene, though it is unclear at this time whether this video depicts the Jaguar’s driver.

The 62-year-old woman passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle and was pronounced dead later that day at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Her 64-year-old husband, who was driving the Cobalt, was transported to the same facility in serious condition. He is now recovering from broken ribs. Three motorists in the vehicles hit by the Cobalt declined medical care at the accident scene.

By Sunday evening, the Chicago Police had the driver of the Jaguar in custody. He faces charges of reckless homicide and fleeing the scene of an accident that caused injury or death, all of which are felony charges. Police believe alcohol was involved.

The victims’ family is asking anyone who may have information about the fatal accident to come forward and contact Chicago Police.
