Car Drives into Porch, Injuring Seven on South Side

On Tuesday Sept. 13, an SUV slammed into the porch of a Gresham neighborhood home on Chicago’s South Side, injuring seven and leaving a young girl in critical condition.

The driver of a Nissan Pathfinder driving through the area hit two vehicles before jumping the curb and crashing into the porch of a nearby home. A young girl who was walking along the roadway was struck and pinned to the home’s porch, and six others were injured in the accident.

The Pathfinder’s driver was treated for minor injuries and taken into police custody. Charges are pending against the driver. The girl was listed in critical condition at Comer Children’s Hospital.

Neighbors question whether or not this accident could have been avoided. Locals say vehicles travel at high rates of speed through the area, and wonder if additional stop signs or traffic signals could prevent such accidents.

The intersection where the accident took place is currently a two-way stop. The young victim’s grandfather says a four-way stop is necessary, and has been advocating for it for years.

The president of a nearby block club reports asking for a stop light at the busy intersection for the past six years. With a school nearby, she and others fear for the safety of area children; the intersection is even unsafe for the school’s crossing guards.

The current 17th Ward Alderman has called the accident an unfortunate happening, saying that resident requests for increased stop signs and traffic signals were made before he was in office. He noted traffic lights along a nearby street with serve as deterrents for the neighborhood.
