A Chicago family is grieving after a fatal Logan Square car accident which happened on Christmas morning. Authorities say that the accident occurred around 4:45 a.m. when a wrong-way driver slammed into the passenger side of a Volkswagen Golf on North Pulaski Road.
The backseat passenger in the Golf was a 67-year-old woman who was declared dead a short time later at the Masonic Medical Center. The woman’s 25-year-old daughter was driving the Golf and it is unclear whether she or the 25-year-old male front seat passenger were injured.
The driver of the 2000 Chevrolet Blazer that caused the crash fled the scene and police are following leads.
Wrong-way car accidents such as this one are frequently caused by drunk driving and sometimes by distracted driving.
Illinois authorities are ramping up their drunk driving enforcement efforts in order to prevent similar crashes. Several organizations have ramped up their PSA campaigns in order to discourage drunk driving as well.
“It’s a problem that’s always going to be around because people drink and it’s socially acceptable,” said Rita Kreslin of the Alliance Against Intoxicated Driving.”It’s totally unacceptable to get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking.”
Courts are also increasing the penalties given to drunk drivers in order to prevent them from harming others. Recently, a Champaign County judge sentenced a 48-year-old Chicago man to 45 years in prison for his eighth DUI conviction.
