Drunk driving is a contributing factor to many Chicago area car accidents. Studies have shown that even a single alcoholic drink greatly increases the likelihood that a driver will be involved in a serious crash. The likelihood of a severe car accident also rises incrementally with every 0.01 blood alcohol percentage of a driver.
Authorities say that a 42-year-old South Side man had a blood alcohol content of 0.106 percent when he caused a fatal drunk driving car accident this weekend. The crash happened on Saturday morning around 1:30 a.m. and killed a 21-year-old man.
The drunk driver alleged that he swerved quickly to avoid a car that suddenly braked on Dan Ryan Expressway. A police report indicates that the man traveled across as many as five of the highway’s lanes, forcing the 21-year-old’s pickup truck into a cement wall. The young man suffered catastrophic personal injuries and was pronounced dead a short time later at the Advocate Christ Medical Center.
The Chicago’s prosecutor’s office filed criminal charges against the man for driving under the influence involving accidental death. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that he was held on a $450,000 bond and is expected back in court tomorrow.
