After Several Deaths, Families Demand Change on Willow Springs Road

In the last year, four deaths have occurred along a dangerous section of Archer Road in Willow Springs. Survivors and victims’ families are urging lawmakers to take action and improve safety along Archer Avenue.

According to those pushing for change, this curvy stretch of road needs attention. A father whose son died in an accident on the road is lobbying lawmakers to lower the speed limit from 55 miles per hour, which he says is too high. Many are also asking for added street lights to improve visibility.

An Illinois congressman has said he is working to prevent accidents along Archer Avenue and has alerted the Illinois Department of Transportation regarding the dangerous roadway. Already lined with crosses, family members hope no more are added to the roadside before action is taken.

Road Known for Dangerous Accidents

Numerous serious and fatal accidents have taken place along Archer Avenue in the past. In the past month, a fatal hit-and-run accident and a dangerous chemical spill have occurred.

At the end of April, a 42-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Archer Avenue, near Midway Airport while crossing the street. Another pedestrian was also struck and injured in the accident. The driver, a 27-year-old man, was later arrested and charged with leaving an accident scene, aggravated DUI and reckless homicide.

On May 9th, a semi-truck overturned on Archer Avenue, spilling its load of hazardous sodium hydroxide. Although no injuries were reported, sodium hydroxide poses severe health risks should it be inhaled or come in contact with one’s skin or eyes.
