Emotional Distress Lawsuit Filed Against Megabus

At least three lawsuits have been filed in connection with the deadly Illinois Megabus accident which happened near Litchfield two weeks ago. Authorities say that a tire on the bus blew out, sending it careening toward a concrete highway pillar.

Megabus is popular among college students due to its cheap rates and downtown drop-off locations. The two of the three lawsuits filed against Megabus were brought on behalf of college students. One 19-year-old DePaul University student says that she was struck by seat in front of her and suffered severe emotional distress when she witnessed the woman in front of her being killed during the bus accident.

The woman killed was a 25-year-old graduate student from Mumbai, India. The woman was pursuing a master’s degree from the University of Missouri’s health administration program. The school says that she was on a scholarship and had a 4.0 GPA. She was killed while traveling with her parents to Columbia, Missouri, according to NBC Chicago News.

“She was a stellar student who made great contributions to the knowledge-building mission of the university,” said University of Missouri Chancellor Brady Deaton. “All of our hearts are a little heavier today as we grieve this loss. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her parents.”

The woman had not seen her parents in over a year when they arrived in Chicago the day of the crash. The severity of her parents’ injuries is unknown.
