A Kane County judge recently sentenced a 48-year-old Aurora woman to 7 years in prison for her role in a fatal 2009 intoxicated driving car accident.
Intoxicated driving is one of the primary causes of fatal Illinois car accidents. Studies have shown correlations between serious car accidents with even the smallest increases in blood alcohol level. Generally, a driver is statistically less likely to wear a seat belt and more likely to speed with each incremental rise in blood-alcohol content.
The presence of illegal drugs also makes it more likely that a driver will cause a serious crash. In this case, prosecutors say that the Aurora woman was driving under the influence of cocaine.
Authorities say that the Aurora woman was driving her pickup truck on the wrong way of Illinois Route 47 when she hit a 54-year-old Marengo man head-on at 73 mph. Police were already aware that the woman had been driving erratically and she was ticketed only 15 minutes before this crash occurred. It is unclear whether she was subjected to field sobriety tests at the time of her traffic stop.
“This crash was clearly preventable, the result of this defendant’s reckless and dangerous driving with cocaine in her system,” State Attorney Joe McMahon said to the Chicago Tribune.
