Authorities are moving forward with criminal charges against a Lohan Square man who fled a deadly West Side car accident last November. The 24-year-old man allegedly ran through a red light at Central Park and Division Avenues around 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 24, hitting a car containing two brothers. The driver of the second car was killed and his brother was seriously injured.
Grocery store surveillance video allegedly shows the 24-year-old man limping away from the area of the crash. Prosecutors also say that DNA taken from a car airbag proves that he was the driver of the car that ran the light. He is currently being charged with leaving a fatal car accident scene.
The Chicago Tribune reports that the brothers were on their way to pick up another sibling at the time of the accident. The 24-year-old hit the brothers’ car on the driver’s side and forced both cars into the iron security gate of a nearby pharmacy.
Firefighters had to work for 10 minutes to free one of the brothers from his car. He suffered traumatic brain injuries and was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The surviving brother suffered injuries to his limbs, ribs and head. The passenger in the 24-year-old’s car had a broken back.
