Human & Pet Food Recalled Due To Salmonella Concerns

Concerns over bacteria contamination have prompted recent recalls for both human and pet products. Contaminated food is one of the primary causes of illness in Illinois and sometimes sparks product liability litigation against manufacturers.

Salmonella and listeria are the most common causes of food product recalls because they can cause serious illnesses. The manufacturer MKG Provisions announced that it was recalling its Atlantic Smoked Salmon because of a potential listeria contamination. The short shelf-life of salmon products means that many of these products may have already been consumed.

Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” the FDA recall notice states. “Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”

Salmonella is the reason why some pet products have been recalled. Kasel Associated Industries recalled all of the products manufactured at its Denver, Colorado, facility between April and September of last year. The pet products have a two-year “best by” date and may still be present at some pet food stores.

“Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting,” the FDA recall notice states. “Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has any of these signs, please contact your veterinarian.”

The items were sold under many brand names including Boots & Barkley, BIXBI, Nature’s Deli, Colorado Naturals, Petco, and Best Bully Stick.
