For the second time in less than a week, a crash involving a Megabus has caused fatalities. Today, a 76 year old woman was struck and killed in the west loop after being struck by a Megabus. According to a report from the Chicago Tribune:
“The bus was turning left at Adams and Canal streets when the sideview mirror hit the woman about 2:15 p.m., authorities and witnesses said. She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition with a head injury, said Fire Department spokesman Cmdr. Sean Flynn… The woman was declared dead at Northwestern at 6:10 p.m., said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala, citing a preliminary notification.”

The seriousness of incidences involving these commercial passenger buses cannot be understated. Given the size, weight and speed at which these buses travel, any contact whatsoever with pedestrians or other vehicles can result in dire outcomes. Because Megabus is considered a “common carrier” under Illinois law, Megabus operators owe the highest duty of care to those around them. That is why it is so imperative that Megabus drivers operate their vehicles with the utmost care.
