Triumph Motorcycles America, LTD is recalling some of its motorcycles due to a potential product defect. The company says that the wheels in two of its motorcycles were assembled using bearings of an unknown quality. Wheel bearings of a substandard quality could fail prematurely and cause a motorcyclist to be severely injured in a traffic accident.
Triumph has no evidence that the recalled bearing fitted is inferior to that required by Triumph, the company told the NHTSA in its recall notice. However, Triumph has no details of the bearing supplier, its quality controls and standards and therefore confidence in the bearing is low. Potential problems arising from bearing quality variability are acknowledged by Triumph. As a precautionary measure Triumph believes it is in the customers best interests to fit the correctly specified bearing from a known supplier with auditable quality control records.
The impacted Triumph motorcycles are:
- Triumph Daytona 675, model years: 2011-2012
- Triumph Street Triple, model years: 2011-2012
- Triumph Thunderbird, model year: 2012
- Triumph Thunderbird Storm, model year: 2012
The company said that it has started sourcing its bearings from a reputable supplier that will monitor the demand for its bearings against Triumphs build.
