Asbestos-Related Litigation

Asbestosis, unlike many other asbestos-related problems, is not a form of cancer. That, however, doesn’t make it any less serious or life threatening for those suffering from it. Recognizing the dangers of asbestos, the Environmental Protection Agency is now regulating asbestos exposure, mandating that if it cannot be totally eliminated, it must be brought down to levels that will cause no immediate harm. Unfortunately, today’s proliferation of cases is a problem carried over from earlier times when the dangers of asbestos exposure were largely and negligently ignored.

The injuries that can be caused from asbestos exposure can range from having an unknown scarring on your lungs, to having breathing difficulty, to full blown mesothelioma. The inhaling of asbestos fibers causes asbestosis. If the inhalation continues over time, it can cause a buildup of deposits on the air sacs in the lungs. When the body’s immune system recognizes the foreign asbestos particles, it tries unsuccessfully to remove them. This causes scar tissue that lessens air-to-blood exchange, causing breathing difficulty and eventually total lung failure. The scar tissue can also restrict blood flow to the heart, making the patient susceptible to heart failure. In its extreme form, asbestos-related injuries can develop into mesothelioma, which is a fast growing, usually fatal, disease process. It can even have devastating effects on a worker’s loved ones due to years of exposure to a worker’s work clothing.

People suffering from asbestos-related injuries, regardless of the extent or severity of their particular injuries, have a legal right to recover the damages that they suffer as a result of their exposure, including lost earnings, medical treatment expenses, pain and suffering, disability and disfigurement. At Goldberg Weisman Cairo, we make sure that our clients’ rights are protected and that they recover the maximum amount for their injuries. The finest lawyers and the most expert professional witnesses in the country are brought together to ensure that our clients achieve the maximum justice under the law that they and their families deserve.
