LAWSUIT FILED IN RECENT CTA REDLINE FIRE
Dwaine Watson was a passenger on the CTA Redline earlier this week and required hospitalization due to inhalation of extensive smoke caused in a fire that was caused to occur in the subway system. Watson retained the law firm of Goldberg Weisman Cairo to file a lawsuit for injuries suffered in the June 20, 2010 CTA subway fire. Mr. Watson was admitted to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment and observation for smoke inhalation and other unknown medical problems.
Mr. Watson’s initial concern was that the thick smoke, fumes and ensuing panic was a result of a possible terrorist attack on Chicago’s subway system. Nonetheless, he devoted himself to helping other passengers on the train before he ultimately became overcome by the smoke.
In an effort to preserve critical evidence that may be necessary to prove how this potential tragedy occurred, GWC filed a lawsuit on June 21, 2010, and has begun their own investigation to determine the cause of this fire. According to Louis Cairo, one of his attorneys, "a common carrier like the CTA owes a duty to its passengers to ensure safe passage. We want to determine why this duty was not provided to our client and to any other persons injured in this accident. CTA officials have indicated that grease used to lubricate the tracks started on fire due to an electrical problem with the electrical system that powers the trains. These systems are owned and maintained by the CTA and their maintenance staff. This was obviously a preventable incident.”
