Post-Trial Motions and Appeals

In many instances, the conclusion of a case in the trial court is not the end at all.  It can, in fact, signal the beginning of a new and equally important battle:  an appeal.  After a jury issues a verdict, any party has the right to challenge it through post-trial motions and, if necessary, appeals to higher courts.  Additionally, if a judge decides to dismiss a case before it is submitted to a jury, the plaintiff (the person bringing the lawsuit) can appeal that ruling and attempt to get the case reinstated.  In these instances, and other scenarios where the law permits a party to appeal a ruling or judgment, it is essential to have an experienced and skilled appellate lawyer on your side.  Under such circumstances, GWC’s appellate lawyers can help.

Having an appellate lawyer consulting and participating  with our trial attorneys during all stages of a trial is one of the resources that makes GWC unique. This resource has enabled our attorneys to win many difficult and complex cases that smaller firms with limited resources would not have access to.

It is important to understand that trials and appeals are two very different types of proceedings.  They are governed by different sets of rules and standards of proof, and the court will often issue a decision based strictly on the parties’ briefs, without hearing oral arguments.  Accordingly, even the best trial attorney may not be equipped to handle an appeal, or vice versa.  Here at GWC, we have some of the best trial lawyers in the state.  Equally importantly, however, we have expert appellate attorneys whose extensive experience will give you the advantage you will need at this stage of your case.

GWC’s appellate attorneys have handled appeals in the Illinois appellate courts, the Illinois Supreme Court, the Federal Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.  The appeals we have worked on involve a wide range of personal injury scenarios, including construction site injuries, automobile accidents, explosions and product liability, to name a few.

GWC has the network, the experience and the substantial resources necessary to win even the most complex personal injury appeals, and our solid record of success in the reviewing courts is a testament to this.  On countless occasions, we have upheld trial court results that were favorable to our clients, and obtained reversals of results that were not.  If you were injured and are in need of an attorney to handle any type of post-trial motion or appeal, look no further than the expert appellate attorneys at GWC.
