DUI Accident Injured Two Chicago Police Officers

Two Chicago police officers were hospitalized over the weekend after being involved in a drunk driving car accident. A 47-year-old Chicago man was allegedly intoxicated when he slammed into an unmarked squad car on Saturday night. The accident happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. at the 7500 block of South Western Avenue in Gresham.

The officers and drunk driver were all taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center. The officers’ injuries are likely going to be covered under workers’ compensation benefits. Workers’ comp benefits are employer-provided benefits for workplace injuries and illnesses. In Illinois, employers or an employer’s insurer have to cover the cost of workers’ comp benefits and this cost cannot be passed onto an employee.

While car accident injuries on the way to and from work after often not considered to be “work related,” car crash injuries that happen while a person is on the job can be covered by workers’ comp benefits. In addition to paying medical expenses, workers’ comp benefits can cover periods of disability, lost wages and retraining needs, if any.

Authorities say that the drunk driver involved in Saturday’s accident will be charged with DUI, reckless driving, driving too fast for condition and driving without insurances, among other things.
