Ship Explodes After Fueling

The incident took place on the afternoon of April 28, 2022. At approximately 4:20 p.m., a forty-foot boat with seventeen people on board completed fueling and began to sail off into the Illinois River from the Spring Brook Marina in LaSalle County, IL. An explosion then reportedly occurred inside the vessel, causing the ship to sink.

Emergency personnel and police officers reported to the site of the explosion shortly afterward. Thirteen of the boat’s passengers were transported to various hospitals for treatment, including one who had to be flown to Chicago with critical injuries. A Spring Brook Marina employee also received medical attention at a local facility.

A spokesperson for the Department of Natural Resources said that the agency would not immediately be releasing the names of anyone involved in the Illinois River boat explosion. It is not known whether any of the victims are represented by personal injury attorneys at this time.

Illinois River Boat Explosion Under Investigation

Authorities urged boaters on the Illinois River to steer cautiously near the wreckage. The sunken ship remained in the water while officers worked to contain leaking fuel.

The Illinois Conservation Police are investigating the cause of the explosion with assistance from the Illinois State Police and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal. Representatives of the United States Environmental Protection Agency were also at the scene to support recovery operations.
