Pedestrian from Des Plaines Struck and Killed by Vehicle in Niles

pedestrianA pedestrian from Des Plaines was struck and killed by a motor vehicle in northwest suburban Niles, IL. This tragic accident serves as a reminder of the heightened risks that pedestrians face in traffic crashes.

Pedestrian Killed on Golf Road

On March 10, 2019, at about 8:46 p.m., 61-year-old Annamma Abraham of Des Plaines was walking east along the curb in the 8600 block of Golf Road, just west of Milwaukee Avenue in Niles, IL. At that time, she was struck by a Honda that was driven by a 46-year-old Glenview woman.

The Niles Fire Department transported Ms. Abraham to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 9:46 p.m. The official cause of death determination is pending from the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

This fatal pedestrian accident remains under investigation by the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force’s Major Crash Assistance Team.

Pedestrians Increasingly at Risk in Traffic Accidents

This traffic accident left a pedestrian dead, but it is far from an isolated incident in the United States. Each year, tens of thousands of pedestrians are injured or killed in traffic accidents.

In 2015 alone, there were an estimated 70,000 pedestrians injured and 5,376 pedestrians killed in accidents nationwide. 150 of those pedestrians were killed in accidents across Illinois, bringing the total to 18 percent more than in 2014. Almost one-third of these deaths occurred in Chicago, where the city’s pedestrian fatality rate increased 31 percent from the previous year.

Alarmingly, this trend continues to get worse, not better. A 2017 report by the Governors Highway Safety Association found that the estimated number of pedestrians killed in traffic accidents in 2016 was 5,997, an 11 percent increase from the previous year. That marks the biggest single-year increase in pedestrian traffic deaths ever and the highest total number since 1990.

And while pedestrian deaths only accounted for 16 percent of total traffic fatalities in 2016, the likelihood of a pedestrian being killed or seriously injured in any given incident can be far worse. Even at low speeds, the impact of thousands of pounds of metal against the exposed human body can cause catastrophic injuries.
