Johnson & Johnson Hip Replacement Recall

On August 26, 2010, DePuy Othopedics, Inc., a part of Johnson & Johnsons Medical Device & Diagnostic group, issued a global recall of both its ASR XL Acetabular System (total hip replacement) and its DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System (hip resurfacing). According to DePuys own press release, this hip replacement recall was prompted by data recently received by the company show[ing] that more people than expected who received the ASR Hip System experienced pain and other symptoms that led to a second hip replacement surgery, called a revision surgery. New data shows that five years after implantation, approximately 12% of patients (1 in 8) who had received the ASR resurfacing device and 13% of patients (1 in 8) who had received the ASR total hip replacement needed to have a revision surgery.

In the five years that the DePuy hip replacement system was on the market, over 93,000 patients received an ASR hip implant. A significant number of those 93,000 patients have been or are now facing the problems that prompted Johnson & Johnsons DePuy Orthopedics to issue the recall. In one such case, Maurice Brigham, a 52-year-old resident of San Bruno, California, has already filed a hip replacement lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson, alleging that he suffered pain, swelling, inflammation, infection and damage to surrounding bone and tissue due to defects with the hip-replacement mechanisms. Brigham had to have the device removed from his leg due to those problems; however, he hasnt been able to get a replacement and, as such, he is now left unable to walk. Brigham alleges in his suit that Johnson & Johnson knew of the faulty hip system and its propensity to fail early for more than two years before issuing a recall of the device.
