Blood Pressure Drug Recall

Pfizer Issues Blood Pressure Drug Recall

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has issued a blood pressure drug recall in light of concerns about a cancer risk from contaminated batches.

Blood Pressure Drug Recall Names Three Products

Pfizer issued its blood pressure drug recall on March 21, 2022. The recall, which is voluntary, is for hypertension medications that are distributed under three names. The affected products include Accuretic and two generic versions distributed by Greenstone – quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets and quinapril HCl/hydrochlorothiazide tablets. The recalled drugs treat high blood pressure, which elevates the risk for serious cardiovascular events such as strokes.

The blood pressure drug recall was reportedly issued because the tablets contained higher levels of nitrosamines, which pose a cancer risk. However, a news release from Pfizer stated that “there is no immediate risk to patients taking this medication.”

“Nitrosamines are common in water and foods, including cured and grilled meats, dairy products, and vegetables. Everyone is exposed to some level of nitrosamines,” Pfizer explained following its blood pressure drug recall. “These impurities may increase the risk of cancer if people are exposed to them above acceptable levels over long periods of time.”

Nitrosamines “Unintentionally Introduced”

Pfizer said that nitrosamines are organic compounds that may be “unintentionally introduced” when certain chemical reactions are used to produce drugs, but the company claimed that it is not aware of any adverse effects resulting from use of the medications. Additionally, there have been no reports of personal injury attorneys filing suit since Pfizer announced its blood pressure drug recall.

Pfizer recommended that wholesalers and distributors stop using and distributing the medication and “quarantine the product immediately.” The company also said that patients who are taking already taking the drug should consult with their doctors about alternative treatment options.
