The Route 4 Cottage Grove bus was rear-ended by another vehicle Monday evening as it W83rd st bus accident, waited on 83rd Street. The mass transit accident injured 15 people, 13 of whom were taken to area hospitals for their injuries. None of the injuries were life-threatening and the injured passengers were listed in stable condition, according to a fire department spokesperson. The truck accident remains under investigation at this time.
The bus was attempting to turn south on Cottage Grove Ave at 6:56 p.m. when it was struck. The violent collision brought five ambulances to the scene where Chicago fire department personnel performed first aid and transported victims to nearby hospitals. No word has been released regarding the condition of the driver of the vehicle that collided with the back of the bus.
As one of the largest public transportation systems in the world, CTA suffers from its share of accidents. In recent years, CTA leaders have made changes to help bus drivers drive more defensively. Defensive driving techniques mean little when your vehicle is stationary and is struck from behind. It has not yet been determined what caused the other vehicle to strike the bus. Alcohol has not been ruled out as a factor in the accident.
