Starbucks Truck Accident Leaves Five Injured in McHenry, IL

Starbucks truck accidentA Starbucks truck accident has left five people injured, two of them critically, in McHenry, IL, about fifty miles northwest of Chicago.

Starbucks Truck Accident Causes Collapse

On January 16, 2020, shortly before 5:00 p.m., a full-size Dodge Ram pickup truck was traveling westbound on Elm Street when it veered off of the roadway east of the intersection of Elm Street and Oak Drive. It then struck a Nissan SUV in a Starbucks drive-thru area before crashing into the coffee shop itself, where at least two dozen people were present. The Starbucks truck accident was so violent that the front of the building collapsed.

While there was initial concern that removing the truck might cause the entire building to cave in, authorities were able to extricate it safely overnight. The McHenry Planning and Development office is currently assessing the structural integrity of the Starbucks location.

Four Taken to Hospital, Two in Critical Condition

According to the McHenry Police Department, five people were hurt in the Starbucks truck accident. The most badly injured were the truck driver and a 21-year-old male barista who was pinned beneath the truck, both of whom had to be extracted by fire and rescue personnel.

One person was treated and released at the scene of the Starbucks truck accident. Four others were taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital, with two listed in critical condition and two in fair condition.

One critical patient’s condition was subsequently upgraded to fair. The other critical patient, the 21-year-old barista, later needed to be airlifted to a second hospital, Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he remains in critical condition.

The McHenry Police Department’s Major Crash Assistance Team is investigating the Starbucks truck accident, with the assistance of officers from the Johnsburg, Spring Grove, and Woodstock Police. The truck driver will reportedly not face charges because the crash was caused by a medical event.
