One in Critical Condition Following SUV Accident

The SUV accident took place at the southeast corner of Halsted Street and Randolph Street at approximately 4:30 p.m. on February 21, 2020. Three male pedestrians had just left Haymarket Pub & Brewery and were crossing the street on their way to a Chicago Blackhawks game at the United Center. According to police, a black Hyundai Santa Fe was heading south on Halsted Street when its male driver lost control of the SUV and struck the pedestrians at high speed. The SUV then hit a parked car on northbound Halsted Street before coming to a stop on the sidewalk.

Two of the pedestrian victims of the SUV accident were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, while the other pedestrian was taken to Stroger Hospital. The driver of the SUV was also taken to Stroger Hospital with injuries. One pedestrian was reportedly in critical condition, while another was in serious condition. According to the Chicago Fire Department, another driver whose vehicle was clipped in the SUV accident refused medical treatment.

The Chicago Police Department shut down Halsted Street between Washington Boulevard and Randolph Street as they investigated the SUV accident.

Pedestrians at Higher Risk in Traffic

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a pedestrian is injured in a motor vehicle collision every eight minutes in the United States, and they are at considerably higher risk than many others in traffic. Even at relatively low speeds, the impact of thousands of pounds of metal can inflict catastrophic injuries on a pedestrian.

While pedestrian deaths only account for approximately 16 percent of total traffic fatalities, the likelihood of a pedestrian getting killed or seriously hurt in a traffic accident can be far greater. In fact, research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that pedestrians are 1.5 times likelier than the occupants of passenger vehicles to die in a crash.
