On May 19, Takata Corp. announced the biggest recall in U.S. history. Nearly 34 million vehicles are being recalled for defective airbags.

After heavy government pressure, including mounting fees from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 11 major automakers doubled the number of vehicles being recalled. The recall covers approximately 13 percent of all cars and trucks on the roads in the U.S.
The announcement had car owners rushing to the NHTSAs website to check if their vehicle was recalled. The website eventually crashed.
This is the second time in less than a year that the website was shut down by a recall. Last October, when Honda expanded the Takata recall, the search function was inoperable for several days.
Unfortunately, consumers could be waiting quite some time before they are advised if their car has been recalled. The NHTSA notes that repairs could take years as there are not enough replacement parts to fix all the recalled vehicles.
Has your vehicle been recalled? The following automakers have been affected by Takata Corp.s announcement:
- Ford
- General Motors
- Honda
- Toyota
- Nissan
- BMW
- Fiat Chrysler
- Mazda
- Mitsubishi
- Subaru
Recalls began in 2008 with Honda. At least six deaths and dozens of injuries have been connected to the exploding airbags within Honda models.
All of the automakers involved in the recalls have said they will respond quickly to the defect notices, but are not yet aware which models are covered.
