A Chicago teen will spend the next 25 years in prison after causing the wrongful death of a police dispatcher during a drunk joyriding session. The 18-year-old teen pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for his drunk driving car accident last year which killed the 42-year-old police dispatcher.
Authorities say that the teen left a party around 6 a.m. on July 10, 2011, highly intoxicated and high on various drugs. The teen saw a driver leave his car on West North Avenue to pay a meter. The motorist left his car idling, so the teen hopped in it and took off.
Police pulled the teen over after seeing him run a red light at the intersection of Blackhawk Street and Elston Avenues, but the teen backed into the officer’s cars during the traffic stop and sped off.
A car chase ensued and only ended when the teen broadsided the dispatcher’s car at the intersection of Hoyne and Armitage Avenues after running a stop sign. The Chicago Tribune reports that the veteran dispatcher was on her way home from a night shift at the time of the crash.
Then teen fled from the scene of the crash but was later caught. His blood alcohol limit was 0.186 percent, which is more than double the legal limit for adults. The teen was 16 years old at the time of the crash, but was charged as an adult.
