Woman Killed in Head-On Crash in Plato Township

Head-On CrashA 78-year-old woman was killed in a head-on crash in Plato Township, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

On June 28, 2017, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Susanne Cannella, of Itasca, was traveling westbound on Plank Road in her 2004 Acura. At that time, Daisy Torres, 23, of Elgin, who was traveling eastbound on Plank Road in her 2015 Nissan, veered into Ms. Cannella’s lane of traffic and collided with her vehicle head on.

Ms. Cannella was later pronounced dead at an Elgin Hospital. Ms. Torres was taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital with “potentially life-threatening injuries.” Ms. Torres’s passenger, Egan Arias, 23, also of Elgin, was hospitalized at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital with what were characterized as non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash reportedly occurred on a straight part of the road, where a no-passing zone starts, according to Kane County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Pat Gengler.

Head-On Crashes

The combined speeds of two vehicles colliding into each other head on can cause an extraordinarily violent impact, leading to serious injuries and even death. In fact, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the head-on crash is the most common type of automobile accident resulting in fatalities. The likelihood of fatality is especially high in the case of wrong-way collisions on high-speed divided highways when one vehicle veers into the opposite lane of traffic and strikes another fast-moving vehicle.
