Back of the Yards Construction Accident Fatal

On January 15, 2021, at approximately 11:00 a.m., emergency medical responders and police were called to a meatpacking plant under construction on South Packers Avenue in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood.

Shortly beforehand, 42-year-old Salem Davis had been attempting to move a filing cabinet out of the construction site. During this attempt, Mr. Davis tried to navigate the cabinet through an opening in a wall that was being propped up by a large wooden board. The board then dislodged and was knocked over, striking Mr. Davis and pinning him to the floor.

Mr. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene of the Back of the Yards construction accident when rescue workers arrived. Authorities later ruled his death accidental.
