Back of the Yards Fire Displaces Families

A Back of the Yards fire has displaced several families from an apartment building on Chicago’s South Side.

Issues Delay Extinguishing Back of the Yards Fire

The fire took place at a multi-family apartment building on South Wood Street at West 47th Street in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood. On the morning of February 20, 2022, multiple families were awakened by a fire at that location. Neighbors evacuated the building shortly thereafter.

The Chicago Fire Department reports that its crews encountered multiple issues while extinguishing the Back of the Yards fire, including frozen hydrants and a roof collapse.

No injuries were initially reported, and the cause of the Back of the Yards fire has not yet been determined. It is also unknown whether any personal injury attorneys have filed suit on behalf of victims of the fire.

Fires Rampant in the United States

Structural fires are rampant in the United States, with more than one million fires across the country each year. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reports that there were 1,291,500 domestic fires in 2019 alone.

According to FEMA, 3,704 Americans died in fires that same year – more than ten fatalities per day. Even fires that do not result in death can cause devastating injuries and disfigurement.
