Dan Ryan Expressway Accident Leaves One Dead

One person is dead and two others are injured following a Dan Ryan Expressway accident involving two vehicles on Chicago’s South Side.

Dan Ryan Expressway Accident After Midnight

The fatal Dan Ryan Expressway accident took place on the early morning of June 22, 2021. At approximately 2:14 a.m., a Nissan Altima was traveling on the outbound Dan Ryan Expressway near 63rd Street when a Lexus LS460 rear-ended it.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene of the Dan Ryan Expressway accident and transported a 28-year-old male passenger in the Altima to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Additionally, the drivers of both vehicles were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Illinois State Police closed the outbound express lanes for several hours while they investigated the Dan Ryan Expressway accident.

Rear-End Collisions Highly Common

Rear-end collisions, in which one vehicle stops or slows down while the one behind it does not, are among the most common types of car accidents. In fact, rear-end collisions occur an average of every eight seconds in the United States.

The most frequent cause of rear-end car collisions is following too closely, or “tailgating.” All drivers have a duty to maintain a safe distance from the vehicles ahead of them. Failure to do so is a violation of Illinois Vehicle Code Section 11-710, which makes the tailgating driver legally responsible for all injuries and property damage that may result from a rear-end collision.

Other frequent causes of rear-end collisions include:

  • Exceeding the posted speed limit.
  • Traveling too fast for conditions.
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • “Distracting” behavior, such as texting, adjusting the radio, reaching for food or beverages – essentially anything that prevents a driver from watching the road ahead.

Helping Rear-End Collision Victims Obtain Justice

The fact that rear-end collisions are so common does not mean that they are not dangerous. Rear-end car accident victims can sustain a wide variety of injuries, including lacerations, broken bones, burns, loss of limbs, brain damage, paralysis, coma, and even death, as in the case of the Dan Ryan Expressway accident.
