A Divvy bicyclist was recently hit by a speeding stolen SUV and thrown onto the hood of another car in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood.
Divvy Bicyclist Taken to Area Hospital
On May 27, 2020, at approximately 6:15 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was driving a white Chevrolet Tahoe on eastbound Hubbard Street at a “high rate of speed’’ when he crashed into the Divvy bicyclist near Ogden Avenue. The force of the collision ejected the biker, who flew onto a gray sedan in a different lane of traffic.
The Divvy bicyclist, a male of unidentified age, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition has reportedly stabilized.
Police later caught up with the SUV took the teen driver and a passenger into custody. They learned that the Tahoe had been reported stolen three hours earlier in a carjacking that happened in the 1200 block of North Cleaver Avenue in the Noble Square neighborhood. Two guns were also confiscated, with charges pending.
Dangers to Chicago Bicyclists
Cycling has become more popular in recent years, particularly with the rise of bike-sharing services such as Divvy in major cities like Chicago. And while many improvements have been made to increase biker safety, Chicago and other densely populated urban areas still present significant dangers to riders, as one can see in the case of this Divvy bicyclist.
Chicago has more than 248 miles of bike lanes, but only about one-third of these lanes are currently protected with barriers or buffers that create additional space between riders and motor vehicles. The vast majority of these lanes still leave Chicago bikers vulnerable to the unique risks of bicycling. With no metal frames surrounding them, as with cars and trucks, bicyclists are exposed to direct contact with other vehicles, obstacles, and the road itself.
