Authorities from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Dept have released initial details on a serious rollover accident that occurred on Wednesday, December 17th on the north side of Twombly Road in Malta, IL.
According to the report, 17 year old Cortland teenager Ms. Sarah Elliott was seriously injured in the accident, after she was pinned inside the 1991 Toyota Corolla she was traveling in at the time of the incident.
It’s believed that the vehicle rolled several times before coming to a rest in a field near Twombly Road, just west of Lucas Road in Malta.
While the driver of the vehicle – 18 year old Mr. Clayton Potter – escaped with non-life threatening injuries, Ms. Elliott was transferred to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria in a critical condition.
Ms. Lisa Canella – a friend and co-worker of Ms. Elliott plans to hold a bake sale to help raise funds for Ms. Elliott’s rising medical costs and was quoted as saying:
Sarahs a very sweet girl, always smiling… She just cares a lot about people.

Police have noted that while the both the driver and passenger were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, they were of the shoulder variety and not lap belts, while extreme speed is also not expected to be a cause of the accident.
In a statement from DeKalb Sheriff Dept’s Chief Deputy Gary Dumdie:
“…I dont think there was any extreme speed in this case. Theres no indication of that.
However, the location of the accident – which changes from a paved road to a gravel surface – has also been the location of a number of accidents in the past, with that change in road surface possibly being a contributing factor in the wreck.
Deputy Dumdie continued:
You do need to adjust your speed when traveling on gravel… Youve got loose material and you do not have the same amount of traction.
The investigation continues.
