GWC Founder Michael Goldberg Named NIFL – AFL-CIO’s Person of the Year

GoldbergOn October 12, 2017, the Northeastern Illinois Federation of Labor – AFL-CIO named GWC Injury Lawyers Founder Michael Goldberg as its 22nd Annual Person of the Year. He is the first non-labor leader and non-politician ever to be honored with this designation.

“I am truly overwhelmed as I look out at this amazing group of friends here tonight,” Mr. Goldberg said. “I am truly humbled to have so many friends in attendance.”

Mr. Goldberg also offered a “very special thank you” to his union friends.

“Union leaders are hardworking men and women dedicated to making people’s lives better,” he said. “For more than forty years, I have been working with you and many union leaders before you. I have worked with many of your fathers, and many others who are legends in labor. What I have learned is there is no one more loyal, honest, or dedicated to helping people than union leaders.”

Mr. Goldberg highlighted labor unions’ dedication to protecting their members from exploitation by management. He also noted that “Unions are the most charitable organizations on the planet,” citing their fundraising efforts for countless worthy causes, including the Rolfe Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, an organization that has taken on special significance to Mr. Goldberg during his battle against pancreatic cancer.

“SGoldbergo Donald Trump, Congress, Republicans, Bruce Rauner, and everyone else who thinks that unions are the problem: You are dead wrong!”

Mr. Goldberg was introduced with warm remarks by Louis C. Cairo, his Partner at GWC, Michael T. Carrigan, President of the Illinois AFL-CIO, and Ron Powell, President of UFCW Local 881. In a written statement presented to the event’s attendees, Illinois Gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker praised this “well-deserved honor for someone who is committed to advancing workers’ rights. As a partner at GWC Injury Lawyers, Michael stands with our labor movement and fights for working families in our state.”
