On July 25, 2013 more than 500 people attended the In Search for a Cure golf outing to raise money and increase autism awareness. Terry Hancock, President of Teamsters local 731 and Vice President of Teamsters Joint Council 25, is the driving force behind this great event that has raised more than one million dollars for autism research. This event, which was started 12 years ago by Terry whose son Brian is autistic, has become the flagship outing searchforcurefor autism research and autism awareness. GWC is the chief sponsor of this outing, underwriting the Ruffled Feathers golf course along with 2 courses at Silver Lakes Country Club.
The diagnosis of autism has increased tenfold in the last decade, affecting an estimated 1.5 million Americans. Autism occurs in 1 in every 88 individuals, 1 in 54 are boys. Autism has been determined to be more prevalent than down syndrome, childhood diabetes and childhood cancer combined. The exact cause of the condition remains a mystery and there is still no cure.
