Wrong-Way Crashes Deadlier Than Other Accidents
Wrong-way crashes, in which one vehicle collides with another vehicle while moving against the direction of traffic, are relatively rare. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, they account for only approximately three percent of collisions. Nevertheless, wrong-way crashes can be deadlier than other types of accidents.
Every year, an estimated 355 people are killed in collisions caused by vehicles moving in the wrong direction. There are an average of 1.34 deaths for each fatal wrong-way car accident, compared to 1.10 deaths for all other types of deadly crashes – an increase of nearly 22 percent in the fatality rate.
