Libertyville school bus accidentAt least seventeen people have been injured in a school bus accident in unincorporated Libertyville, IL. The Libertyville school bus accident reportedly involved three buses and a dump truck.

Libertyville School Bus Accident Was “Chain Reaction”

According to authorities, the accident was a “chain reaction” – the term for a series of rear-end collisions involving three or more vehicles.

On August 1, 2019, at around 10:45 a.m., three loaded school buses were traveling west on Route 37 at River Road in unincorporated Libertyville. The buses were carrying approximately 144 children and counselors from the North Suburban YMCA summer camp in Northbrook. At that time, a Mack dump truck hauling landscaping materials was traveling directly behind the buses. When the buses slowed down for traffic, the dump truck driver failed to reduce his speed and collided with the bus ahead of him. The force of this collision caused that bus to strike the bus ahead of it, which caused that bus to collide with the bus to its front.

At least seventeen people were transported to area hospitals for reportedly non-life-threatening injuries stemming from the unincorporated Libertyville school bus accident. Most were treated and released, though two remained hospitalized with undisclosed injuries as of that afternoon. Paramedics evaluated the remaining passengers at the scene.

The three bus drivers and the dump truck driver, a 44-year-old Elgin man, were uninjured in the Libertyville school bus accident. No tickets were issued immediately, but the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said the dump truck driver would likely be cited for his failure to reduce his speed to avoid a crash.
