A recent Naperville left-turn accident split one of the cars involved in half, with its driver being ejected from the vehicle.
Naperville Left-Turn Accident Shuts Down Traffic
The Naperville left-turn accident took place on November 13, 2020. Shortly before 3:11 p.m., an 18-year-old Naperville man was driving a silver 2008 Buick eastbound on Diehl Road, approaching its intersection with Mill Street. At the same time, a 29-year-old Chicago man was driving a black 2008 Audi westbound on Diehl Road. The Audi’s driver then attempted to turn left onto southbound Mill Street but failed to yield the right of way to the Buick, causing a collision.
The driver of the Buick was ejected from his vehicle during the Naperville left-turn accident. Emergency responders transported him to Edward Hospital for what were classified as non-life-threatening injuries. Debris from the incident also damaged an uninvolved vehicle and a nearby building. Aerial footage of the scene appeared to show that the Buick had been split in half.
The intersection of Diehl Road and Mill Street was shut down immediately following the Naperville left-turn accident. Traffic was rerouted until approximately 6:32 p.m.
The driver of the Audi was cited for his failure to yield the right of way when turning left, though police are continuing to investigate the cause of the Naperville left-turn accident.
Left-Turn Accidents Are Both Common and Dangerous
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than three million auto accidents take place at intersections in the United States each year. Most of these incidents are the result of improper left turns. In fact, left-turn violations are responsible for twenty percent of all vehicle accidents across the country.
Left turns are more physically and mentally challenging than right turns. Drivers frequently make errors in judgment when attempting a left-hand turn, particularly in terms of the space and time required, which can lead to sudden, sometimes catastrophic crashes.
Additionally, making a left turn across traffic can be especially dangerous because drivers often accelerate when doing so. This can result in a wider turning radius at a higher speed, exposing other motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to a greater risk of serious injury or death.
GWC Fights for Left-Turn Accident Victims
Under Illinois law, drivers turning left are required to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic, making them liable for left-turn accidents in most cases. Nevertheless, insurance companies are not in the business of simply handing out money. They will often do whatever they can to limit their financial exposure, including minimizing the extent of a plaintiff’s damages or even attempting to shift blame away from their insured.
