The Chicago Teachers Union has been locked into contract negotiations for over a year. Last week’s announcement that a serious offer is now being considered is a sign that negotiations are finally progressing.
The Chicago Teachers Union announced they will be taking a serious offer made by the School Board under consideration. The Union’s Big Bargaining Team will be voting on the offer on Monday, February 8th, which happens to be the same day that final-stage fact-finding talks are to start. If the Union’s Big Bargaining Team members vote ‘yes’ to the deal, it must still be approved by their House of Delegates prior to finalizing a contract with the School Board.
This progress in contract negotiations has come about following Republican offers to allow the state of Illinois to take control over the school district. Those offers would also make it possible for the school district to file for bankruptcy. The CEO of the Chicago Public School District states that a deal is expected to be completed by the beginning of next week at the latest.
What Union Members Stand to Lose
As contract negotiations progress, representatives from the Chicago Teachers Union state that members may lose certain benefits which they had previously been entitled to. The new contract terms could signal the end of the city’s payment of pension contributions required by teachers, as well as other monetary concessions in order to protect job security and the quality of education in Chicago schools. Despite losing some benefits, the Teachers Union states they will not budge on one critical issue: pay raises based on a teacher’s experience and seniority.
