A Kansas City area woman has just been released from a hospital where she has been since a 300-pound sign fell on her at an Alabama airport. The woman was returning from a Florida spring break trip with her family and did a layover in Alabama. The seven-member family was together when a flight board fell on several of the members.
The mother and three of her children were taken to local hospitals. The woman’s 10-year-old son was pronounced dead at Children’s of Alabama about an hour after the accident.
The Birmingham Airport Authority conducted a meeting to determine why the sign fell and whether other signs in the airport are safe. It appears that the accident happened in a newly renovated part of the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.
Media reports indicate that the mother had surgery for a fractured pelvis and broken ankles. Her 8-year-old son had a broken nose and leg, and a 5-year-old son sustained a concussion. Two of the women’s children and her husband were not injured in the incident.
The airport and its contractors will likely face a substantial premises liability action from this family and possibly from people who were traumatized by seeing the accident.
