Woodstock Explosion Causes Fire in Hospital

A Woodstock explosion caused a fire in a Northwest Illinois hospital.

Woodstock Explosion Put Out by Security

The Woodstock explosion took place on the evening of December 31, 2021. At approximately 8:04 p.m., the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District and the Woodstock Police Department received a report of an explosion and fire in the security office near the emergency department at Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital at 3701 Doty Road in McHenry County.

According to Woodstock Fire/Rescue District Communication Specialist Alex Vucha, a minor fire had been extinguished by security officers prior to the arrival of officials. The security officers had initially activated the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System to bring additional resources to the scene, but cancelled it once the fire was out.

The Woodstock explosion was the result of a battery jump starter igniting on a countertop. The fire was reportedly contained to the immediate area with minimal damage.

Fire officials remained on the scene to assist hospital staff in clearing the office and ventilating the area of dry chemicals and smoke.

Though the incident is not believed to be suspicious in nature, it remains under investigation. No personal injury attorneys are known to have filed lawsuits over the Woodstock explosion at this time.
