A historical firehouse in Chicago, IL, built in 1887 is being restored. However workers working on the restoration were exposed to asbestos and forced to work under hazardous conditions.
The electrical hazards in particular posed significant safety risks to the workers. An investigation by the U.S. Department of Labors Occupational Safety and Health Administration found that the company conducting the restoration, Structure Development Midwest LLC, did not collect and dispose of asbestos materials using the safety standards necessary.
For these violations, the company was fined nearly $50,000. Exposure to asbestos can cause serious harm including:
- Lung complications
- Cancer
- Cardiopulmonary infections
Unfortunately, one of the other dangers of asbestos is that health complications can show up decades after an employee is exposed to the hazardous materials.
At GWC Injury Lawyers, we take workers rights very seriously and work to ensure that employees who are harmed by employers get the financial compensation that they deserve.
