Five Year Old Killed In Pedestrian Accident

No criminal charges are expected against the driver who caused the wrongful death of a 5-year-old pedestrian in Highland Park yesterday afternoon. CBS News reports that the accident happened yesterday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. on Central Avenue near Green Bay Road.

Pedestrian accidents have been increasing across the country in recent years despite declining number of car accident deaths. Car accident deaths are less common now because of the increased safety features available to protect drivers and passengers. Pedestrians do not benefit from any vehicle safety enhancements and frequently suffer catastrophic personal injuries in car crashes.

Authorities say that the little girl who was killed was walking with her 25-year-old mother and two younger brothers, ages 2 and 4. The mother and brothers were also injured and hospitalized, but their injuries are considered non-life-threatening.

The pedestrian accident happened when an 18-year-old girl driving a Lexus jumped the curb. Witnesses say that the teen had been driving erratically shortly before the accident occurred. The teen driver also passed briefly while talking to police. It is unclear whether she has known medical issues.
