Bicycle Accident Sends Two to Area Hospitals

The bicycle accident happened on June 23, 2020, at around 8:30 a.m., at the corner of Belmont Avenue and Milwaukee Avenue. According to witnesses, a 31-year-old female cyclist was hit and dragged by a city maintenance truck when its driver made a right turn at the intersection. The truck reportedly belongs to the Chicago Department of Transportation.

According to local businessman Esteban Burgoa, “The only way the truck stop [was] because the local guys who are looking for work here were kind enough to hear the screams of the lady and run in front of the truck to tell him to stop.”

Multiple day laborers jumped in front of the city truck after seeing the bicyclist get run over, including Eduardo Rosali, who said “The lady is under the truck. She’s screaming. We saw the truck and went and pull on her. She couldn’t get out by herself.”

The cyclist was transported to an area hospital in serious but stable condition following the bicycle accident. Residents say the intersection is dangerous because of its numerous blind spots for drivers and pedestrians.

The 48-year-old male driver of the city truck was taken to Swedish Hospital for observation, telling investigators that the bicyclist was in his blind spot.

Bicycle Accidents on the Rise

In the increasingly densely populated Chicago area, residents have frequently started using bicycles as their primary means of transportation. But with this rise in cycling comes an elevated risk of bicycle accidents. More bicycles on the road can lead to a greater number of these incidents, a fact that statistical evidence bears out. The Illinois Department of Transportation reports that bicycle accidents have been on the rise, up to 1,720 in 2015 compared to 1,634 a year earlier.

These numbers are worrisome because a bicycle accident can be much more dangerous than a crash involving another type of vehicle. With no metal frame surrounding and protecting a rider, that person faces exposure to direct contact with other vehicles, obstacles, and the road itself, increasing the likelihood of serious injury in a collision.
