So just how bad is our ranking? According to a recent study by WalletHub, a personal finance website, Chicago is the 8th worst city for drivers in the nation. Contributing factors included gas prices, traffic and the likelihood of being involved in an accident.

WalletHub analyzed 100 heavily-populated cities across the country. The study factored in the cost of owning a car, the traffic and road conditions, the safety for drivers within the city, and the driver and car wellness to determine which states faired the best for drivers and which were the worst.
Chicago ranked among the highest for car maintenance costs and parking rates, and was worse than average for car theft, the number of repair shops, gas prices, traffic delays and accident risk.
Other cities rounding out the worst in the nation included Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and San Francisco.
- The absolute worst city for drivers? New York City took top honors.
- The best cities for drivers? Lubbock and Corpus Christi, Texas, scored the number one and number two spots respectively.
Overall, the study found that the average commuter spends approximately 200 hours a year on the road, and most of that time is spent stuck in traffic. The study also estimates that the average household spends about $1,700 annually in fuel expenses and wasted time, not including an additional $500 for maintenance and repairs.
