NBC Chicago reports that four people were injured in an elevator accident yesterday afternoon. The accident happened at around 3 p.m. At 60 E. Delaware. Authorities say that the downtown parking garage accident happened when an elevator plunged from floor 15 to 10.
Elevator mechanics rescued the four elevator accident victims by using an adjacent car. Two people were rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the other two were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
When an elevator drops like that, like they claim it did, it can be a pretty scary situation, a firefighter said. Thank God that there are safety backups on these elevators and braking systems that they will eventually grab and stop.
Mechanics were able to arrive at the scene within an hour. The other elevators in the building kept working throughout the rescue efforts.
It is unclear what caused the elevator to malfunction or whether the building has a history of building code violations.
