Contigo Kids Water Bottles Recalled Because of Choking Hazard

Contigo kids water bottlesMillions of Contigo kids water bottles are being recalled for the second time in less than six months because of a possible choking hazard.

Spouts on Contigo Kids Water Bottles May Detach

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of “Contigo Kids Cleanable Water Bottles” on February 19, 2020. According to reports, the product’s clear silicone spout can detach, posing a choking risk for children. To date, Contigo has received 427 reports of a spout detaching and another 27 reports of a spout ending up in a child’s mouth.

This is the second time these Contigo kids water bottles have been recalled, coming less than six months after an initial recall on August 27, 2019. The current recall involves about 5.7 million Contigo Kids Cleanable Water Bottles, along with the replacement lids that had been given to consumers as part of the first recall.

Contigo said that only models with black-colored spout bases and spout covers are included in this recall. The base and cover of the defective clear silicone spout will always be BLACK. Additionally, “Contigo” should be printed on the rim and along the front near the bottom of the affected bottle.

The bottles themselves come in three possible sizes (13 ounces, 14 ounces, and 20 ounces) and four possible colors (solid color, graphics, stainless steel, and stainless steel solid colors). The impacted Contigo kids water bottles were sold individually as well as in two-packs and three-packs.

The bottles are manufactured in China and imported by Contigo USA of Chicago, IL. Their recall number is “20-074,” which is printed on the rim and along the bottom of each bottle.

Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled water bottles, take them away from children, and contact Contigo for a free water bottle. Anyone who received a replacement lid in the previous recall should also contact the company for a new water bottle.

The impacted Contigo kids water bottles have been sold since April 2018 on various websites and at major retailers nationwide, including Costco, Walmart, and Target. About 157,000 bottles have also been sold in Canada, while another 28,000 have reportedly been sold in Mexico.

Holding Companies Accountable for Over Four Decades

Nearly everywhere we go in the United States, we are surrounded by products, whether it is the latest smartphone in our pocket or a simple water bottle in our child’s hands. Whatever form they take, these products all have one thing in common: we buy and use them to improve our lives, not to make them worse.

But unfortunately, products can fail us, often disastrously so. Far too often, manufacturers choose the bottom line over consumer safety, sometimes with tragic results. When this happens, it can be difficult for their innocent victims to know what to do next. Who will make sure these corporate giants pay for their negligence?

Hopefully, like so many others before them, they turn to GWC Injury Lawyers LLC.
