Five-Year-Old Boy Struck and Killed in Englewood SUV Accident

A five-year-old boy was struck and killed and two other people were injured in an Englewood SUV accident on Chicago’s South Side.

Curb Jumped in Englewood SUV Accident

The Englewood SUV accident took place at approximately 11:10 p.m. on March 19, 2021. At that time, a 44-year-old man was driving an SUV westbound in the 600 block of West Marquette Avenue when he allegedly struck an electrical box. The impact caused the SUV to jump the curb and hit five-year-old Kawantis Robinson, who was walking with his mother and sibling. The SUV then came to a complete stop after it crashed into a building.

Kawantis was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m. from injuries he sustained in the Englewood SUV accident, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. His mother and sibling were reportedly unharmed.

The driver of the SUV and his 48-year-old female passenger were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment. They were in good condition and expected to recover.

The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Unit began investigating the cause of the Englewood SUV accident, and it was not immediately clear whether any charges would be filed.

Pedestrians at Greater Risk of Serious Injuries

The tragic death of Kawantis Robinson in the Englewood SUV accident highlights how pedestrians are at greater risk of sustaining serious, sometimes fatal injuries in collisions. While they are only involved in approximately 16 percent of traffic accidents in the United States each year, pedestrians are far more likely than vehicle occupants to die in these incidents. In fact, 5,987 pedestrians were killed in domestic collisions in 2016 alone, which is the equivalent of one death every 90 minutes.

This heightened vulnerability is the result of the devastating impact that thousands of pounds of metal can inflict on the exposed human body, even at comparatively low speeds. When vehicles travel at higher speeds, the severity of the resultant injuries can increase exponentially.
