On June 6, 2017, GWC Injury Lawyers attorney Jacqueline Hickey attended the 18th Annual Human Rights Awards luncheon for the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC), an organization that she proudly supports.
Founded three decades ago, with offices in Chicago, Indiana, and Washington D.C., NIJC is dedicated to ensuring human rights protections and access to justice for all immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers by providing pro bono legal services to and advocating for these populations.
The awards luncheon honored attorneys and others who have gone above and beyond in volunteering their services to help immigrants in gaining status in this country.
“I am a supporter of their cause as I have family who have come to the United States with an undocumented status as well,” said Ms. Hickey. “The presenters’ stories were heartbreaking but also incredible. I continue to volunteer with various immigration nonprofits, to assist Spanish-speaking immigrants in applying for citizenship.
“The political climate we are currently in,” Ms. Hickey continued, “even more so directly affects those immigrants seeking asylum, permanent residency, or citizenship from all parts of the globe.”
This year’s award recipients included Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Aon, Reed Smith LLP, and Dr. Zaher Sahloul. More than 1,000 people attended, raising more than $1 million for the organization.
