I-57 Semi-Truck Rollover Blocks Inbound Traffic
On December 4, 2020, at approximately 1:20 a.m., a large semi-truck with an attached trailer was traveling on I-57, heading towards downtown Chicago. The semi-truck then rolled over near 123rd Street and 125th Street.
All inbound lanes of traffic were blocked as a result of the 1-57 semi-truck rollover. As of 5:30 a.m., crews were still working to clean up the debris from the incident. Other vehicles were forced to pass on the left shoulder at the time.
According to the Illinois State Police, no injuries were reported from the I-57 semi-truck rollover. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time.
Semi-Truck Rollovers a Serious Road Hazard
While nobody appears to have been injured in the I-57 semi-truck rollover, truck rollovers remain a serious road hazard. Because of their sheer size and weight, large trucks have great difficulty starting and stopping quickly. They also have a higher center of gravity that can make rapid maneuvering dangerous, since their weight can shift dramatically. When a negligent truck driver stops suddenly or fails to prepare adequately for a turn, the vehicle can all too easily roll over, and the resulting crash can be catastrophic.
According to the most recent data, approximately ten percent of truck accidents involve rollovers. Semi-truck rollovers can easily result in multi-vehicle collisions that may place many other motorists in jeopardy. And those involved in a truck rollover accident die nearly fifty percent of the time, compared to the twenty percent who are killed when a car rolls over.
Even those who survive a semi-truck rollover incident can face significant physical injuries, including broken bones, lost limbs, brain damage, spinal trauma, paralysis, and coma. These types of injuries can be both physically and economically devastating, with escalating medical bills and lost income putting families on the brink of potential ruin.
Truck Accident Lawyers Serving Chicago
The damages associated with truck accidents are especially unfortunate because truck accident litigation presents unique challenges. In most cases, semi-trucks are commercial vehicles transporting goods for business purposes. This can increase the complexity of a claim, as multiple parties may be responsible.
In addition to the truck driver and that driver’s employer, another company may have hired the employer to ship its products. In some instances, other companies may also be involved. It is essential that truck rollover accident victims identify and pursue all of the parties who could be at fault, since failure to do so within the time allotted by law could forever bar them from obtaining full and fair compensation.
Additionally, the insurance companies representing these parties have an incentive to fight plaintiffs every step of the way, often minimizing or even denying liability outright to limit their financial exposure. When faced with such obstacles, semi-truck rollover victims need somebody to fight for them, like the Chicago truck accident attorneys at GWC Injury Lawyers LLC.
