NBC Chicago reports that recently-signed New York Knicks point guard Jason Kidd was arrested last weekend. Authorities say that the arrest occurred because the basketball star was involved in a drunk driving car accident in the Hamptons on Sunday.
Drunk driving is one of the most common contributing factors in car accidents throughout the country. Alcohol inhibits a person’s judgment, motor skills and response times. Recent studies have shown that even one drink increases the risk of a car accident involving serious personal injuries or fatalities. The likelihood of a serious crash increases with every incremental 0.01 rise in a driver’s blood alcohol level.
Jason Kidd’s attorney said that basketball star was returning from a charity event at the time of the crash. The crash happened around 2 a.m. Sunday morning when Kidd ran his 2010 Cadillac Escalade into a pole and veered into the woods near the town of Water Mill.
The basketball star was arrested for drunk driving after his crash but released without bail according to the Southampton Town police.
Prior to signing with the Knicks, Kidd played for the Dallas Mavericks. If convicted of his DWI charges, he could potentially face a year in jail.
