Collision with Sedan in Skokie Motorcycle Accident

On September 3, 2020, at approximately 9:45 a.m., authorities responded to reports of a collision between two vehicles in the 3500 block of Howard Street in Skokie, IL. According to preliminary information obtained by the Skokie Police Department, a 17-year-old boy was riding a motorcycle eastbound on Howard Street when a sedan pulled out from a parking lot into his path, causing a violent collision.

The teenager was transported from the scene of the Skokie motorcycle accident to Evanston’s St. Francis Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The sedan’s 65-year-old male driver was reportedly taken to Skokie Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Skokie Police Department and the North Regional Task Force Major Crash Assistance Team are conducting an investigation into the cause of the fatal Skokie motorcycle accident.

How Motorcycles Put Riders in Danger

Motorcycles can put riders in greater danger than other means of transportation. When there is no metal frame surrounding them, as there would be if they traveled by car or truck, riders risk exposure to direct contact with other vehicles, obstacles, or the road itself. This exposure means that motorcyclists are much more likely to sustain serious injuries in a crash, as in the tragic case of the Skokie motorcycle accident.

This sad fact is borne out by statewide traffic statistics. Though only 1.5 percent of all road incidents involve motorcycles, motorcycle crashes account for 5.0 percent of all traffic-related injuries and 16.7 percent of all traffic fatalities in Illinois.
