Truck Accident Leaves Two Vehicles in Flames

On May 17, 2020, shortly before 11:00 a.m., three semi trucks were traveling eastbound in the center right lane on the Eisenhower Expressway near St. Charles Road. One truck then lost control and struck the rear of the truck directly ahead of it, which in turn hit the truck ahead of it. The Illinois State Police said that two of these trucks became engulfed in flames upon impact.

One of the drivers, a 39-year-old male, was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Illinois State Police are investigating the cause of the truck accident.

Truck Accident Claims Are Especially Challenging

Truck accident claims can be so much more devastating than other types of traffic accidents because of the sheer size of the trucks themselves, with semi trucks often forty or more times heavier than the typical vehicle on the road. Given its sheer weight, a semi truck traveling even at low speeds can inflict punishing injuries upon impact, including broken bones, amputated limbs, brain trauma, paralysis, or even death. These truck-related injuries can be financially devastating, with extensive medical bills that are frequently accompanied by a loss of income.

The heightened economic impact of large truck accidents is especially unfortunate because truck accident claims can present unique challenges for personal injury lawyers. In most cases, semi trucks are commercial vehicles transporting goods for business purposes, which may increase the complexity of a claim because of the number of parties that may be involved. In addition to the truck driver and that driver’s employer (if different), frequently another company may have hired the commercial transport company to ship its products, with still other companies potentially involved as well. The victim of a truck accident needs to identify and pursue all of the parties who may be at fault because failure to do so within the time limited by law could forever bar a plaintiff from obtaining the financial compensation he or she deserves.
